LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

SORRENTO
Sorrento has been a resort town since 600AD, its high clifftop setting providing rich Romans an ideal spot to build their vacation villas. Nicknamed ‘La Gentile’ because of its gentle climate and friendliness of the locals it is still a popular destination for tourists with its many evening concerts, markets, restaurants, bars and shops.

AMALFI COASTLINE
This winding cliff top road is said to be the most spectacular road in Europe. Hire a car or scooter to experience all the sensational view points along the way, particularly the stop above Positano. Closely packed in villas of pink and white create a breathtaking scene along the steep hillsides. Carry on to Amalfi, once a successful and prosperous Marine Republic, look out for the impressive cathedral at the top of the stairs from the main town square, it holds the remains of the patron saint of Amalfi, and Scotland, St Andrew.

RAVELLO
Further along the Amalfi drive is Ravello, 1100ft above the sea, an amazing feat of engineering and architecture.

NAPLES
Chaotic traffic (even the footpath quaifies as a traffic lane), bustling streets, colourful streetlife, the third most populated city in Italy with over 1 million residents Naples is an experience in itself. With its origins dating back to 600BC Naples has a diverse range of cultures including Greek as well as Roman influences. Try the famous Neapolitan cuisine, not forgetting this is the birthplace of the Margarita pizza, with many restaurants catering to all budgets.

POMPEII
Visit the most famous buried town, lost in the eruption of 79AD it was not rediscovered until the 1700s. follow the guide along the ancient streets to see the Roman baths, forums and villas built by wealthy Romans. The preserved frescos and mosaic floors will give an insight into the everyday life of ancient Romans.

HERCULANEUM
This town is probably the better preserved of the two towns destroyed in the 79AD eruption as it was covered by a huge river of mud rather than burning ash and rocks. Rediscovered in 1709 much of the wooden construction and household objects have survived to today.

MOUNT VESUVIO
Comfortable walking shoes and your camera are essential on this one. The slopes were once covered with vineyards and woods, disguising the violence within to the townspeople below. The coach will take you as far as 1000m from the summit where there is a walkway to the top for the best views over the bay of Naples. A single plume of smoke rises from the crater to remind us that the volcano is only sleeping for now…

ISOLA CAPRI
Day trips leave at 9am, sailing across the Bay of Naples landing at Marina Picola. The 5 hour island tour takes in Villa Curzio Mlaparte, L’Arco Nturale, the White Grotto and the Salto di tiberio. There is a shorter half hour tour of the stunning Blue Grotto. The day trip returns to Santa Fortunata at 6pm.
